Ну и кину для начала часть своего превью. Оно на англ, просто изначально предназначалось английским ребятам..
Ronde van Vlaanderen: Who will win?Tour of Flanders – the second monument of the season will be taking place on Sunday April 3, and offers the first really serious objective for the cobble specialists. A great number of various previews are normally published before the races of such a scale in the cycling world. But I hope that you will be interested exactly in this analysis.
There are a few types of previews that can tell us about the route of the race, about exciting culture of the locality and incredible history of the race, but as for us, the most interesting one should present the top-list of favorites. First of all, we watch races not because of beautiful landscape, but because of action on the roads, terrific and fair rivalry between the best cyclists in the world. So here are “hot top” cyclists who are going to become the main participants of the Sunday’s race.
The top 10 contenders1) Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland) Leopard Trek
Last year's winner is undoubtedly he main favorite of the upcoming event. His advantage looks so huge that there is a wish to finish this preview right now and not to consider low chances of other riders except Tom Boonen's ones. This year Fabian has already done a podium in the 1st monumental race Milan-San Remo and won the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen in a great style soloing to an impressive victory. It's time for us to remember last year's Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris – Roubaix and the same success in Grand Prix E3 which was the first step to the overall triumph. Obviously, Tour of Flanders is a long hard race and there are many strong teams with all the riders looking only for Cancellara, but scarcely even three mechanical problems won’t be a real problem for the world time trial champion.
2) Tom Boonen (Belgium) Quick Step
All the fans are waiting for their duel with Fabian to be continued and in justice Tom does everything for such hopes to be true. Just a few days ago he won Gent-Wevelgem for the first time since 2004 and it seems that finally he is in shape with all health problems becoming a thing of the past. As opposed to the last year’s squad of Quick Step, this year there are no disagreements between team leaders because after the leaving of Stijn Devolder the leader is the only one and it is Tom Boonen. Chavanel and Steegmans are other possible keys on the way to success against Cancellara, but will they be a real power chasing Spartacus or trying to exhaust him?
3) Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) OmegaPharma – Lotto
Philippe is not a daredevil fighter anymore who starts thinking about inappropriateness of the attack only after it’s over. Now he is going to beat Cancellara tactically. Being the only active rider with podiums in 4 different monuments means that he is a hot favorite for all terrain races including hilly Ardennes and Lombardia, MSR that suites sprinters better and cobbled Ronde van Vlaanderen. Gilbert has 3 wins and 3rd place in Primavera, it seems that OmegaPharma leader is capable of a successful attack at any moment in any part of the race. His next objective is Tour of Flanders where he was 3rd in last 2 editions. Philippe is on fire and in Jurgen Roelandts he has a perfect domestique rider who also may have his own chances in the final sprint with only two questions – how many riders will be in front and will Gilbert be also there?
4) Juan Antonio Flecha (Spain) Team Sky
Team Sky looks like a real team with all riders in roster being cards to play. They have proven it with podiums of Sutton, Thomas and Hayman in Belgian one-day races this year, but if they want to have the same success at Tour of Flanders all of them including Stannard and young ambitious star Edvald Boasson Hagen should work for The Spanish Flandrian. He was a runner-up in Omloop and finished in the peloton in both Waregem and Wevelgem accelerating energy for this monument. Juan Antonio is at his best, highly motivated, fully protected by British team and still searching for the big win. It means that Van der Flecha will be a strong contender on Sunday and we should wait attentively for his attack.
5) Garmin-Cervelo (USA)
On paper the American squad is simply the best with three spearheads – Farrar, Hushovd and Haussler. Selection of cobbled specialists is so high that even Sep Vanmarcke, runner-up in last year’s Gent-Wevelgem, who’ve also done a perfect race this weekend in Waregem is out of the roster of 8 riders to take start in Sunday’s race.* Let’s start analyzing chances of Garmin leaders with newly Australian Heinrich Haussler. Unfortunately, he still has a lack of his best conditions in comparison with spring 2009. Hushovd has more chances to follow somebody’s attack and Tyler Farrar looks more competitive in the final sprint. So in this case versatility of Heinrich doesn’t play a decent role but anyway he will be able to replace Thor and Tyler if something goes wrong. As for Thor Hushovd, he may collaborate with Flecha and Ballan, then this group will have a fair chance to come to the finish line ahead of the peloton and World RR Champion will remind everyone that he is still a top-sprinter. And the American is the main favorite to win a bunch finish equally with Matt Goss. In 2010 the peloton didn’t catch 4 riders, in 2009 – 1 rider, in 2008 – 3 riders, so maybe this year it’s time for 2 escapees? Millar, Klier, Vansummeren and Hammond give Tyler all chances to sprint even for the 2nd place because no way Cancellara won’t gain a solo victory. However Vaughters has something drastic on his mind: “but with Fabian like that… I don’t know, I’ll have to hire a sniper!”
6) Alessandro Ballan (Italy) BMC
Another American team is also a big player in the North Classics putting all their big guns on the start line. Former Ronde van Vlaanderen winner Alessandro Ballan finally returned to his past conditions proving it with strong performances in Milan – San Remo and Montepaschi Strade Bianche. By the way we shouldn’t forget about “Big George” Hincapie who fortunately has decided to continue racing in 2012 and about aggressive rider Greg Van Avermaet having a nice sprint in reserve. But they will most likely be an important part of BMC strategy to achieve a high final place of Ballan.
7) Matthew Goss (Australia) HTC – Highroad
Current leader of the UCI WorldTour ranking is developing into a serious power in the Spring Classics. He has just won Primavera but is ready to perform to his second great success. As Tyler Farrar HTC sprinter will seek for an opportunity to outsprint for the win from the group of 20-30 riders. Probably, this sprint won’t be for the victory, but anyway, second running podium place in monument will be an unbelievable achievement.
8) Nick Nuyens (Belgium) SaxoBank – Sungard
Of course it’s unreal to replace Spartacus as a team leader for North one-day races, but Nuyens is doing his best, replacing Matti Breschel on the highest spot on the podium in Dwars door Vlaanderen – Waregem. His form reminds us of his true abilities of cobbled specialist which he showed last time being a Cofidis rider. He is definitely in position to fray top-favorites’ nerves.
9) Filippo Pozzato (Italy) Katusha Team
When both Tom Boonen and Philippe Gilbert take part in the race, the Italian automatically becomes one of the favorites because of his practice to ride on their wheels. But this time it seems like he is apparently in poor shape to follow and then to outsprint them. Katusha roster includes also Hoste and Gusev, who are in contrary in perfect form. In other words, Russian team has several cards to play and it is doubtful whether the whole team will work for Pippo as it was in MSR.
10) Dutch teams
The last 10th place in this “hot top” is created for two Dutch teams – Rabobank and Vacansoleil – DCM. For them Classics are specialized races but their leaders for some reasons have low chances to show a decent result. Rabobank had an impressive start of the season with 12 victories and Omloop win of Langeveld among them. But Sebastian is suffering from a crash in Milan – San Remo which can adversely affect his conditions, Matti Breschel misses the Spring Classics because of knee problems and as for Lars Boom, route of Tour of Flanders seems to be too difficult. Speaking of Vacansoleil riders' chances the determining factor will be bad conditions of former two-times winner Stijn Devolder and Bjorn Leukemans, the only rider who firstly could follow Cancellara after his attack in Paris-Roubaix 2010. A dark horse here could be the Italian Marco Marcato who is a good sprinter and one-day racer. He is in a nice form and being a protected rider can stand any selectivity.
Dark horses:
Peter Sagan, Daniel Oss (both Liquigas), Maxim Iglinskiy (Astana), Simon Spilak (Lampre), Steve Chainel (both FDJ).
